Questions About Packrafting.

What exactly is packrafting?

Packrafting is versatile, offering many forms of water travel. It allows you to carry a potential watercraft wherever you go.

You can enjoy it by hiking to a water source and then switching to your packraft, or by biking to the water, attaching your bike to the raft, and paddling away (bikerafting). It’s also great for accessing remote ski spots, with skiing and paddling combined.

Packrafts are ideal for reaching remote lakes, making alpine lake fishing a breeze. For extended adventures, incorporate a packraft into your trips, such as crossing mountain ranges or entire countries. The possibilities with a packraft are endless.

How do you inflate a packraft?

Inflation Bags are a lightweight alternative to inflating your packraft.

To explain how inflation bags work, imagine holding a bin liner bag open towards the wind and catching all the air that blows inside.

  1. Catch the air.
  2. Twist the top of the bag shut.
  3. Squeeze the air out of a valve at the bottom of your inflation bag and into your packraft.
  4. As you get towards full inflation, you’ll need to remove the inflation bag and finish off inflating by mouth as hard as you can.

It takes between 8-10 bags to fill the packraft, you’ll be ready to go in minutes!

When you enter the water the coldness of the water will cool down the air in the tubes and it will sightly decrease in volume. No problem, just top up by mouth. again to achieve the right pressure.

What happens if the packraft gets damaged? Can I repair it?

Packrafts are designed for portability, being lightweight and compact enough to carry in a rucksack all day, but this comes at the cost of being more prone to punctures due to their material.

Despite being tough and durable, packrafts are still inflatables and can get damaged. However, they tend to bounce off obstacles rather than puncture immediately because of the low air pressure inside, which allows the fabric to absorb impacts. If a puncture occurs, it usually doesn't cause immediate sinking, giving you time to reach shore.

For temporary field repairs, DuPont’s Tyvek Tape is highly effective and readily available in the UK. For long-term repairs at home, ensure the puncture area is clean and dry, cut a heat-sealable fabric patch with rounded corners, place it over the puncture and utilise inflatable PVC adhesive.

What is a skeg?

Our Iron Raft removable packraft skeg is designed to be lightweight and long lasting. Packrafts do tend to turn in when paddling. A skeg reduced yawing when you paddle, increasing your paddling efficiency. Do take care in shallow waters, as there is a risk in catching, meaning you can damage both your packraft and skeg.

Can I use a Paddle Ready Iron Raft on whitewater?

Our Paddle Ready Packrafts are suitable for multi-day adventures, whether that be bikepacking, fishing or hiking. As for white water, the Paddle Ready + comes with a removable spray deck which means it is suitable for light rapids up to Class 2 we suggest.

What is the difference between a packraft and a kayak?

Unlike traditional kayaks, packrafts are inflatable and can be easily packed into a small size, making them perfect for remote locations and multi-sport adventures.

Weighing from 3.2kg, our Iron Rafts can be carried in a backpack, allowing for seamless transitions between hiking, biking, and paddling. Despite their compact design, packrafts are versatile and durable, capable of handling calm lakes, rivers, and even whitewater rapids. This portability and adaptability make packrafts an ideal option for those looking to explore diverse and challenging terrains without the burden of heavy gear.

How fast can you paddle a packraft?

A packraft can typically be paddled at speeds of about 2 to 3 miles per hour (3 to 5 kilometres per hour) on flat water. Experienced paddlers in ideal conditions might reach up to 4 miles per hour (6.5 kilometres per hour), but speeds will be lower in rougher conditions or whitewater.

How far can you packraft in a day?

In a day, you can typically packraft between 10 to 20 miles (16 to 32 kilometres) on flat water, depending on conditions and your paddling endurance.

Our Paddle Ready Packrafts weigh from 3.2kg!

The Paddle Ready = 3.2kg

What is a TIZIP?

A TIZIP is a type of waterproof zipper. It is designed to provide a secure, watertight seal, preventing water from entering the raft through the zipper.

TIZIPs are often used on storage compartments or access points on the packrafts, allowing users to keep gear dry while still having easy access. They are known for their durability, resistance to water pressure, and ability to withstand the harsh conditions often encountered during packrafting.

You can choose to include a TIZIP with your Paddle Ready + Packraft.

Questions About Building Your Own DIY IRON RAFT.

Which iron do I use? Packraft tools.

A heat sealing iron and some common household items are all that’s needed to build your own homemade packraft.

The heat sealing iron you’ll need for your homemade packraft can be purchased in the UK relatively cheaply.

We have used both the Jamara Pro Star iron and the Prolux Digital Iron. Or look at the Smaller Electric Iron when dealing with smaller seams and tight areas. Our fabric’s TPU coating is activated at roughly 220 degrees.

What is heat sealing?

Heat sealing is a process used to join pieces of fabric or to apply patches to fabrics by using heat and pressure, creating a strong, airtight, and watertight bond. In the context of Iron raft fabrics, which are typically made from durable, thermoplastic materials such as PVC or TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), heat sealing is an essential technique for ensuring the raft's integrity and longevity.

What size Iron Raft kit do I need?

IRON RAFT Self-Build Kits come in Small (S), Medium (M) and Large (L).

All IRON RAFT Self-Build Kits are approximately 35cm at the widest inside point and approximately 20cm at the narrowest inside point.

Approximate Internal lengths:

Small: 110cm

Medium: 120cm

Large: 130cm

For optimum performance your packraft should have a snug fit. For comfort you may want a little extra space. To gauge what size best suits your needs, sit up square against a wall with your legs out straight. Measure from the wall to the bottom of your feetThis measurement will give you a rough idea of what sue you will want but soll vary depending on the use of your buoyancy aid, shoes, boots, use of a seat backrest etc.

How much weight can I carry in an Iron Raft DIY Packraft?

When you take into account the volume of air in the tubes and the volume of air in the cockpit area of the boat, it would take a huge load to sink one of our Iron Raft Packrafts.

In reality it doesn’t work like this and you’d have some serious handling problems before you got to that stage.

Our packrafts are designed to more or less float on top of the water. This means the more weight you load into/onto it, the worse your boat will handle and it will become increasingly difficult to paddle.

For an agile boat we recommend limiting your luggage to 25kg. We recommend you never exceed loading you boat with more than 150KG in total (you + luggage).

Weight of the rafts when built?

Please note that the below weights are approximates.

Approximate weights:

Small: 1800g

Medium: 1900g

Large: 2000g

The weight will change depending on if you add a TIZIP, luggage loops etc. The approximate weights above are for a fully built fron Raft without any of these additional features.
